Jeffrey Weidel has been working in the Sacramento area as a sportswriter since 1981. An avid golfer with a 10.6 index, he is currently the Assistant Sports Editor of The Press-Tribune, a three-day a week paper in Roseville.
In a Press-Tribune story in 1996, his touching portrait of Roseville golf pro Ed Vasconcellos, a kidney donor to his son, won Weidel a first-place finish in the features category, awarded by the prestigious California Newspaper Publishers Association. He won again in 2000 for a series of stories on a Little League All-Star team that made a strong run at the Little League World Series five years ago. Weidel has also teamed with Sports Editor Jeff Caraska to produce three first-place finishes and one runner-up spot the last four years in the CNPA's selection of best sports section in its small newspaper category.
Weidel resides in the Sacramento area with his wife (D.J.), daughter (Courtlin) and Brianne, a very sociable cockatiel, plus a Maltese puppy named Sierra.
